Almost everyday we hear about illegal passages from Turkey to Greece – on land and on sea. We hear about people being abandoned and abused by authorities and traffickers. We hear about zodiacs and boats being chased into international waters because nobody wants them. We hear about zodiacs and boats sinking –illegal migrants on the boats disappear, die in cold waters far away from home. The daily news in the media, the daily information locally becomes numbers. We forget about the human beings who are represented by those numbers. We forget about the right for every person to live a life in dignity and to escape from inhuman conditions.
During this summer a group of people from both sides of the Aegean founded a platform called “kayiki”. The members of the platform decided to prepare a campaign to raise awareness of the opaque situation during the sea passages of illegal migrants. While the European Union is “securing” the outside borders with big, armed boats from the united force called “FRONTEX” the other side is not ready to deal with the number of people trying to pass over to the EU.
A website, a postcard campaign and video spots are in the process of creation. Within a month they will be presented to the public by the members of “kayiki”.
